Obituary

Elizabeth L. Sammon passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2009, at the age of 86, with her daughters at her side. A memorial service will be held 6 p.m., Friday, May 8 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, Iowa, with visitation from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Liz was born July 13, 1922, in Pella, Iowa, to parents Luke and Effie Van Ooyen.  She graduated from Oskaloosa High School, and worked for several years in the Oskaloosa area. She was married to Marvin Sammon from 1952 to 1983, and they lived in several locations before settling in Indianola, Iowa, with their two daughters, Maureen and Nancy. Liz had a long career in banking, finally retiring when she was 74 years old. She stayed very active in retirement, spending time with her grandchildren and great granddaughter, cooking (especially her famous brownies), working in the yard, going to Iowa football games, casinos and anywhere else Nancy's car was going. She loved a good meal out and a great martini.

Liz was preceded in death by her parents, brother John Van Ooyen and sister Eva Schippers. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Maureen Sammon and Jim Hansen of Clive, Nancy and Larry Goering of Indianola; grandson Josh Goering and his wife Cynthia; granddaughters Emily Goering and Sarah Goering; and great granddaughter Dakota; her brothers and sisters and their families, Pete and Mary Van Ooyen of Oskaloosa, Luke and Helen Van Ooyen of Lebanon, MO, Jenny Darland of Indianola, Gertrude and Bob Kauffman of Mechanicsburg, PA, and Junella and Len Chase of Oregon, IL; and many friends.

Thanks to the kind and caring staff at Iowa Methodist Hospital for their excellent support over the past few years. Memorial contributions may be made to the family or in Liz's name to the Kiya Koda Humane Society, Indianola, Iowa. Online condolences may be sent at www.overtonfunerals.com.
