Obituary

Eleanor May Van Winkle, 87, of Indianola, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, May 19, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 24th at Indianola Regular Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Baker City, Oregon at a later date.

Eleanor was born April 28, 1918, in Baker City, Oregon. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Wayne Staples & Harmon Van Winkle; her parents, Warren & Vera Powell; and one sister, Dorothy Cameron. She is survived by two daughters: Janis and husband John Hart of Indianola, Iowa, and Virginia and husband Monty Thompson of La Grande, Oregon; one sister, Mary Ellen Groen of John Day, Oregon; five grandchildren: Wayne and wife Donna Hart, Kathy and husband Clifford Stephenson, Wanda and husband Pierre Habecker, Carla and husband Gene Bates, & Larkin Thompson; nine great grandchildren: Eric Bates; Joel and wife Carrie Hart, Aaron and wife Änna Hart, Jason Hart, Dean Stephenson, Angela Stephenson, Shana Stephenson, Tausha Habecker, & Clayton Habecker and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She was such a FUN Grandmother doing cartwheels, back-bends, splits and playing games & baseball with them up into her sixties. She would quote scripture to them word perfect.

Eleanor went to grade school in Rye Valley, Oregon & graduated in 1936 from Vale Union High school in Vale, Oregon & got an accounting degree from LaSalle Extension University in Chicago, IL.

Eleanor was a welder in the shipyard during World War II. She was an accountant for Ore-Ida Frozen Foods for 25 years. In her spare time, she was a farmer, 4-H leader, mechanic, seamstress, gardener & carpenter.

Eleanor was a faithful member of the Baker Valley Christian Assembly for 19 years serving as a Deaconess, Sunday school teacher, Missionettes leader, Ladies Bible Study speaker & visitation ministry.

Visitation will be held prior to services at the church, on Tuesday, May 24 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Mission Fund of the Indianola Regular Baptist Church.
