Services for Edwina Mae Foley, 91, who died Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at the Village Health Center in Indianola, will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, May 1 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the New Virginia Cemetery.
Edwina was born February 16, 1919 in rural Clarke County, Iowa to Ancel and Clara (Fry) Kennedy the second child of seven. She was a farm girl raised during the Great Depression. She graduated from New Virginia High school and attended Simpson College receiving her teaching certificate. She taught in a one-room school house at Quail Trap and Squaw Valley for three years.
Edwina married Waldo Stewart "Jake" Foley on May 17, 1941 and to this union two children, Larry and Jane, were born. They lived in the Medora farming community on top of Skinaway Hill. Jake passed away on October 18, 2005 and Edwina moved to Juniper at the Village in 2008.
Edwina was known by her family and friends for her wonderful good old fashion home cooking and beautiful wedding cakes. She enjoyed quilting and crocheting. She was a member of the Medora Ladies Aid and along with being a farm homemaker worked for the Medora Country Store.
She is survived by her children, Larry Foley of New Virginia and Jane (Sam) Martin of Indianola; grandchildren, Tony (Amy) Foley of Boone, Lori (Craig) Tassin of Des Moines, and Sam Martin IV (Renée Congdon) of West Lafayette, IN; great grandchildren, Katy Rose, Michael and Joseph Foley and Luke, Levi, Jacob and Drew Tassin; brother, Herbert (Marilyn) Kennedy of Cedar Rapids; sister, Helen (Kenneth) Blair of Osceola; brother-in-law, Ernest Lympus of MS; sister-in-law, Velna Kennedy of New Virginia; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by parents, Ancel and Clara Kennedy; husband, Waldo Stewart "Jake" Foley; infant grandson, Nathaniel Grant Martin; two brothers, Don and Merrill; and two sisters, Virginia Lympus, and Anah in infancy.
Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 30 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to Medora Ladies Aid. Online condolences may be sent at www.overtonfunerals.com.
