Obituary

Graveside Services for Dwight Thomas McCormick, 77, of Indianola, Iowa, who passed away Monday, April 27, 2026, will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 7, at the IOOF Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Indianola, followed by lunch at the Indianola Elks Club. Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 6, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola.

Dwight was born on August 28, 1948, in Knoxville to Thomas and Evelyn McCormick. He was the seventh of nine children, growing up in a large, close-knit family that helped shape his hardworking nature and deep appreciation for others.

He graduated from Indianola High School and went on to pursue further education, including time at Iowa State University. Dwight built a long and successful career as an electrical engineer, working for Armstrong Tire and later Titan Tire, where he retired after many years of dedicated service. A master troubleshooter, he enjoyed tackling new challenges and finding solutions using the latest technologies. He was committed to lifelong learning and took pride in expanding his skills to solve whatever problem was in front of him.

On March 8, 1968, Dwight married the love of his life, Mary Leach. Their home reflected a sweet practicality. Careful and frugal in everyday things, yet always open-handed and generous when someone else needed help. He was a proud father to Doug (Angie) McCormick, Darren McCormick, and Melissa (Jon) Szkil. He was also a loving grandfather to Clint McCormick and Abby McCormick.

Dwight was rarely still. Whether he was working on the farm, building something new like their home (often a project or two left “still in progress,” as the family would lovingly joke), or lending a hand to a neighbor, he found purpose in staying busy and helping others. Known for his generosity, he would give the coat off his back to someone in need.

He had a quick wit, an unforgettable sense of humor, and a gift for storytelling that could keep a room entertained. Dwight loved people and never missed a chance to connect, especially with his cherished afternoon “happy hour club,” where laughter and friendship were always in abundance.

More than anything, Dwight lived life fully. He was social, hardworking, kind-hearted, and deeply devoted to those around him. His legacy is one of generosity, humor, and a life well-lived.

Dwight is survived by his wife, Mary; his children and grandchildren; and his siblings, Dwayne McCormick, Marilyn Jackson, Edith Hardie, and Kathy Conrow. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Florence Quick, Harriet Matrie, Alice Cook, and Linda Marshall.

Memorials may be given in memory of Dwight to Indianola Fire and EMS.
