IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Douglas Eugene
Dyer
August 7, 1942 – June 30, 2023
Services for Douglas Eugene Dyer, 80, of Norwalk, will be held 10 a.m. Friday, July 7, 2023 at Overton Funeral Home with burial following in the Webb Cemetery, rural Norwalk.
Doug was born on August 7, 1942 to Olive and Ellsworth Dyer in Ottumwa, IA. He grew up in Des Moines and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He met his forever sweetheart Zelda Anne Wood and was married on April 30, 1960. Doug and Zelda were blessed with three daughters, Georgia (Robin Lynch) Dyer, Diana (Steve) Webb and Dee (Brett Cushman) Welch. Work took Doug and his family to Wyoming and they later moved back to Iowa where they made a forever home for their family in Norwalk Iowa.
Doug worked as an ironworker for over 30 years retiring in 1997. Retirement was not in his blood so he began working for Maytag where he also retired after working there for 10 years. Yet again he was unable to sit idle so he began driving for the Des Moines Auto Auction which brought him back to cars which was always a passion of his. That job gave him great joy and reminded him of when he owned D&D Auto Sales in Des Moines.
Family and friends have always been a priority to Doug. He instilled this to his daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family friends, and honestly anyone he spoke to. Doug always made a point to encourage others to be a part of something which he showed us all through his membership in several groups including the Masons, Shriners, and the Eagles Lodge.
Doug was also a very proud grandpa to Wendy, Ashly, Dougie, Billiejo, and Daren. He was especially proud to say he was lucky enough to be a great grandpa to Skylinn, Jaden, Noelle, Noah, Caleb, Tavin, Ella, Emma, Kaylee, Breanna, Demitri, Kevin, Rylie, Jeffery, Dea, Griffin, and Waylinn. He has always made sure they all knew how much he loved them and how very proud he was with each and every one of them. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester Ellsworth and Olive Dyer, brothers, Sonny and George Dyer; father and mother in law, Jim and Grace Wood.
Alzheimer's took his family from him but he never lost his family because his strength continues to live on through his family.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 6, 2023 at Overton Funeral Home with Masonic Services to be held at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be given in Doug's memory to the Alzheimer's Association.
