Obituary

Services for Dorothy Champlin Hawkins, 86, formerly of Des Moines, Ia, who died Thursday, January 15, 2009 at the Indianola Good Samaritan Center will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 20, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola.  Burial will follow in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Des Moines.

Dorothy was born on June 21, 1922 in rural Warren County, Iowa to Mark and Bessie Champlin.  She was the third child of six.  She resided in rural Indianola until her marriage to Clarence Hawkins on May 3, 1947 at the Little Brown Church.  She then moved to Des Moines.  She attended the Americana Beauty School, and then managed her own shop at East 15th and Walnut, Walnut Beauty Shop, for 43 years.  She was a member of the First Grace Brethren Church in Des Moines.  After retiring, she resided in nursing homes in Indianola and Des Moines.  She brought the message to many in the nursing homes with scripture and prayer.

Dorothy is survived by her two daughters, Carla (Terrence) Welton of Des Moines and Jerilyn (George) Covarilli of Saginaw, TX; grandchildren, T.J. Welton of Des Moines and Jordan, Jared and Jianna Covarilli of Saginaw; siblings, Betty (Dean) Curtis of Des Moines, Ilka Harvey, and Lewis (Joyce) Champlin of Indianola; sister-in-law, Marie Champlin of Indianola; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Kenneth and Marcus Champlin; and nephew, Burton Champlin.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present to greet friends.  Memorials may be given to Hospice of Central Iowa, Knoxville office or Indianola Good Samaritan Center.
