DORIS L. JOHNSON Indianola A Visitation and Life Celebration for Doris L. Johnson (Smith), 92, of Indianola who passed away, November 26, 2011 will be held at the Christian Union Church fellowship hall, 707 E. Euclid Ave., Indianola, IA, on Sunday, December 18, 2011, from 1 to 4 p.m. Doris donated her body to science in the hopes of helping others; therefore, no funeral is planned. Doris was born March 17, 1919, in Aurora, NE, to Walter and Rosa Leymaster. She grew up in Aurora and became a teacher at the age of seventeen. Doris moved to Charles City, IA with her parents and sisters in 1938 and continued teaching in several different cities throughout Iowa. She taught in Allison, Marble Rock, Greene and Titonka before moving to Indianola in 1956. She then taught at Norwalk and finally, Des Moines, IA. She retired from the Des Moines School System in 1982 after teaching in the same classroom, at the same school, for twenty-two years. Doris raised two children; taught school full-time; put herself through college; helped with her children's school activities; and assisted them with their college expenses - all, as a single mother. Doris's two children, their spouses, three grandchildren, grand daughter-in-law, and two great grandchildren were a great source of love and pride to her. She enjoyed every moment spent with them, as well as, watching each of them grow and change through the years. Her retirement was especially enjoyable for her because she had so much more time and freedom to visit family and friends. She is remembered by many as a valued teacher, trusted friend, loved mother, and cherished grandmother & great grandmother. Survivors include her son, Jim Johnson (Rich Hartzell) of Indianola; her daughter, Jan McClelland (Dick) of Reasnor; her grandchildren, Mike Beck (Carrie) of Lacona, Kevin Beck of Reasnor, and Ryan Beck of Lacona; great grandchildren, Grant and Madi Beck of Lacona; sisters, Helen Youngerman of Charles City, Ruth Stratton (Sydney) of Burlington and Jean Nash of Grenada, CA; as well as, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Doris was preceded in death by her parents. Any memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa and sent to HCI Care Foundation, 2910 Westown Parkway, Suite 200, West Des Moines, IA 50266.
