Doris Ann
Fridley
November 28, 1934 — June 2, 2026
Doris Ann Fridley, 91, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, in Indianola, Iowa, with family and friends at her side.
Doris is survived by her husband of nearly 73 years, Bob; children, Mark and Tracy; grandchildren, Casey (Jade) and Chelsea; great-grandchildren, Olive and Nixon; and sisters, Patty, Donna, and Judy (Robert). She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Olive Divine; sister, Jeanne; and brothers-in-law Sam, Danny, and Gary.
Doris was born on November 28, 1934, in Indianola to Harold and Olive (Foust) Divine -- the third of five sisters. From an early age, she helped with farm responsibilities and assisted in the family's fur business. She maintained a close bond with her sisters throughout her life.
Doris graduated from Indianola High School. While in high school, she met the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Fridley. They were married in Lawton, Oklahoma, in 1953, while Bob was serving in the United States Army. Following his military service, they returned to Iowa and established their homestead in Cool, Iowa.
They were soon the parents of two children, Mark and Tracy. Doris worked alongside Bob in the fields, cared for livestock, prepared meals for family and farmhands, and maintained a welcoming home. She was renowned for her cooking and baking, especially her pies, which became a family favorite. She became affectionately known as "Grandma Cookie" by many children who visited the farm.
In her spare time, she became a successful Mary Kay consultant and was recognized as one of the top salespeople in Iowa. She also cleaned homes, worked as a gardener in Des Moines, and taught at an elementary school in Indianola.
Doris loved to travel and was particularly fond of the southwestern United States. She would spend summers at her second home at Table Rock Lake, often inviting family and friends. There she accomplished one of her personal goals by waterskiing at the age of 70. She and Bob attended auto races and enthusiastically cheered for Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart. In her later life, she traveled to Belgium with her sister Judy.
Doris also loved sending, receiving, and playing cards. She wrote letters not only for birthdays and special occasions but also to let someone know they were in her thoughts. She received over 400 cards on her 80th birthday. She also loved playing card games at any opportunity, particularly enjoying Pitch and Spades.
When her grandchildren, Casey and Chelsea, arrived, she would spend ample time with them telling stories, reading, fishing, and vacationing. In her later years, Doris especially cherished visits from her great-grandchildren, Olive and Nixon. She enjoyed being involved with what they were doing and made a point of cooking their favorite meals when they came to visit.
