DONALD TURNER
Services for Donald Dean Turner, 89, who passed away Thursday, November 28, 2019 in Des Moines, following a long time heart disorder, will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 3 at the Liberty Center United Methodist Church, Liberty Center, IA. Burial will follow in the Liberty Center Cemetery.
Don was born on October 25, 1930 to Lee and Leta Tuner in rural Lacona, Iowa. He completed the 8th grade at Primrose #9 Country School and went on to graduate from Liberty Center High School as valedictorian. The Country School building still remains on the Turner property. He married Velma Hasting August 30,1947, and they were happily married for 72 years. Don was employed 40 years for the Warren County Roads Department as a survey crew chief and was known for his accuracy. He retired from the County to become a full time farmer. Don had a passion for hunting and all sports. He was an avid hunter and was well known for his outstanding ability to train hunting dogs. Don and Velma were also remembered for their Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus visits throughout the community. Don really enjoyed family gatherings and time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. They provided him great pride and joy with all their accomplishments.
Don is survived by his wife, Velma; children, Eugene (Kayla) Turner, Milo, Richard Dean (Shirley) Turner, Centerville, Cris Wright, Nevada, four grandchildren, Janelle (Dan) Snyder, Julie (Daren) Long, Jeff (Sharon) Turner, Eric (Jennifer) Turner, five great-grandchildren; Alexis Turner, Grace Long, Luke Turner, Gage Long, Ava Turner and sister, Millie Amos, along with numerous other relatives, friends, and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Leta Turner and a brother, Orville Turner.
Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, December 2 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be given to Liberty Center United Methodist Church or Lacona Fire and Rescue Department.
