Don was born in South English, Iowa and graduated from North English High School and A.I.B. in Des Moines. He had served in the Air National Guard for 14 years and the United States Army for 14 years retiring in 1995. He had also retired from Armstrong Tire and Rubber. He worked for the I-35 School District as a bus driver, worked part time for Veterans Memorial Auditorium, Des Moines Convention Center and Drake University for the athletic events. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #165, past County Commander and 6th District Commander for the American Legion. He served as Warren County Director of Veterans' Affairs and had worked for 45 years at the Iowa State Fair and numerous years at the Warren County Fair.
Don is survived by his wife, Connie of Indianola; children, Jennifer (John) Welcher of Osceola, Jeffery (Betsy) Coffman of Castro Valley, CA, Jean Louise (Randy) Collins of Osceola, and Jolene Murphy of Indianola; sister-in-law, Catherine Coffman of Sigourney; 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola where family will greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be designated to the Don Coffman Memorial Fund to be distributed to the various organizations that he was involved with.
