Obituary

Deloris Collins, 90, of Indianola, Iowa, passed away Monday, June 10, 2024, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 1 pm, Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Indianola First United Methodist Church, with burial following in the Indianola IOOF Cemetery. The visitation will be held prior to services from 11 to 1 p.m. at the church, where family will be present to greet friends.

Mamie Deloris Collins, daughter of Frank and Mamie Nicholson was born on March 28, 1934 in Clarke County, Iowa in a small farmhouse. She graduated Le Roy High School in 1952.

Deloris married the love of her life Wayne Collins shortly after graduating high school. Together they lived in Waukegan, Illinois and later Norfolk, Virginia while Wayne served in the United States Navy. They later moved to their forever home on the farm in Indianola. Together they raised four sons. Deloris was a homemaker for most of her life. Keeping track of four busy boys wasn't an easy job, but she handled it with determination, love, and a firm hand when needed.

Deloris and Wayne regularly attended Sunday morning services for over 55 years at Indianola First United Methodist Church. She was known as a friendly and caring person, but always brought that Deloris spunk wherever she went. She volunteered for many different community organizations including: President of the PTA at Hawthorne Elementary School, taught Sunday School for over 30 years at IFUMC, volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, as well as, Evening Lions of Indianola, up until her passing. Deloris enjoyed gardening, planting flowers, and spent many seasons working on the flowerbeds around her home to make them the beautiful sight they are today.

Deloris' passion in her life was her family. Her favorite thing was to have a busy house full of the people she loved. If you came to Deloris' house, she would happily find some food for you to eat (whether you were hungry or not), a place to sit and chat, and open arms to hold that baby. The thing she loved the very most was being a grandma and a great grandma. She was a loving grandma to all her grandkids. While they were young, she would help babysit whenever she was needed and as they grew, she would show up to all their activities. She was their biggest cheerleader and supported them all with love. Even a few weeks before she passed, she could be spotted along the soccer field cheering on her great grandkids. She was referred to as "farm grandma" by many of the grandkids' friends, because she was truly a grandma to all. She was a consistent presence in the lives of those she loved. Deloris was truly loved by her family and will be forever missed.

Deloris is survived by her children, Roger Collins, Steve (Deb) Collins, Brian (Jamie) Collins, William (Deb) Collins; grandchildren, Melenie (Brian) Grimm, Steve (Melissa) Collins, Jessica (James) Vasey, Jason (Hannah) Collins, Melissa (Darwin) Curl, Joshua (Michelle) Collins, Allison (Kaleb) Marois, Nicole (Matt) Nickel; great-grandchildren, Jadelynn, Liberty, Justus, Faithlynn, Titus, Harmony Curl; Arlowyn Collins, Abigail, Lillian and William Vasey, Elena Grimm, Cameron and Lucia Collins, Grace and Jesse Nickel, Emery and Delilah Marois, and baby girl Collins coming soon; and sister, Nancy Moore. She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne Collins; daughters-in-law, Grace Collins, Lori Collins; grandchildren, Crystal and Daniel Collins; parents, Layefette and Mamie (Morris) Nicholson; brothers Bernard and Carl Nicholson.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Deloris to the Indianola Evening Lions Club.
