Obituary

Delmar Edward Butler, age 85, died June 2, 2024, in hospital care in Des Moines, Iowa. Delmar was born September 25, 1938, in Des Moines, Iowa to Marjorie (Green) and George Butler and was a life-long Des Moines resident. Delmar attended Park Avenue School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1956. Delmar went on to work at Ahern Pershing Office Supplies and then served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963, serving as a specialist E4 with the 444th Transportation Unit out of Fort Riley, Kansas. Delmar received numerous occupational medals during his service including the Good Conduct, Rifle Expert, Sharpshooter, and Armed Forces Expeditionary awards. Delmar was proud to have served in Operation Long Thrust in Berlin, Germany while serving his country. After leaving the U.S. Army, Delmar went to work for the U.S. Postal Service for over 38 years, where he received numerous awards for his service; Delmar officially retired in 2002. Delmar married Sally Losee on September 7, 1962, and had 3 children (Randy, James, Catherine) whom he loved dearly.

Delmar enjoyed many hobbies, including being a Master of the Masonic Home Lodge 370 in Pleasant Hill, fishing, spending time at his family property in Bemidji, Minnesota, and tinkering in his garage on many different projects. In his later years, Delmar enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and buying them treats.

Delmar was preceded in death by his parents, Marjorie and George Butler, his wife of 58 years, Sally, son Randy, sister Donna, and grandson Levi.  He is survived by his son James (Kateri) Butler, daughter Catherine Butler, two grandchildren Noah and Maryn Butler and a sister Marlys (Butler) Curry.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 13, 2024 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola.  Inurnment of cremains will follow services in the Jordan Cemetery in West Des Moines with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9127 at 4029 Urbandale Ave, Des Moines, I.A. 50310.
