He was born in the Indianola Hospital on November 6, 1949 and had lived all his life in Indianola. He worked for Herschel Manufacturing, his brother at Jerry's North Star in Indianola, Super Value Warehouse in Des Moines, Hypes Snow Removal and took over the family business, Hypes and Sons Scrap Metal in 1990 from his father. He enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. He also liked horses, fishing, dogs and playing cards.

He is survived by his fiancé, Theresa Ohnemus of Indianola; his children, Josh (Jennifer) Heward of West Des Moines, Michael (Jim Quick) Hypes of Newton, Raquel (Robert) Lundy of Osceola, Tami (Donnie) Boutwell of Italy, Veronica (Michael) Goode of Indianola, Venessa Ohnemus of Pleasant Hill and Victoria Ohnemus of Indianola; brothers, Jerry (Sharron) Hypes of Des Moines and Randy (Diane Dooley) Hypes of Indianola; sister, Sue (Lonnie) Douglas of New Virginia; 12 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 1 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.
