Services for Darrell Labertew, 77, of Indianola, Iowa, who passed away Saturday, July 18, 2026, at home in Indianola, will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 28, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Burial will follow services in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Darrell had a way of turning everyday routines into something special, and he never passed up a chance to share what he loved with the people around him. His sweet corn was something of a local treasure. He planted multiple batches every year just to make sure there was plenty to go around. Whether you were a neighbor, a friend, or someone he ran into at a fair, chances are you went home with an armful of corn and a smile, thanks to Darrell.

If there was one thing you could count on, it was seeing Darrell at the Warren County Fair or the Iowa State Fair. Those weren’t just outings, they were his annual “vacations,” and he didn’t miss a single year. You could usually spot him easily, enjoying the day with a cold Budweiser in hand, taking it all in and making the most of every moment.

Back at home, Darrell was just as dependable. For over 40 years, he and Karla farmed side by side, building not just a life together, but a partnership rooted in hard work, dedication, and plenty of shared memories along the way. His morning neighborhood lap in the “Ole Yeller” truck became something of a daily tradition. Neighbors always knew what time it was when they heard Darrell rolling by. It was a small thing, but it brought a sense of familiarity and comfort that will be deeply missed.

Darrell also had a soft spot for animals, especially cattle. That love wasn’t just a hobby—it was a passion he carried with him and proudly passed down to his daughter, Kristine. Today, that legacy lives on through her cattle operation with her husband, Travis, a continuation of something that meant so much to him.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Karla Labertew; children, Ryan (Christie) Labertew and Kristine (Travis) Houseman; grandchildren, Faith and Noah Labertew, Payton and Berkeley Houseman; brother, Dick (Kathi) Labertew; brother-in-law, Lyle (Reeca) De Goey; nieces and nephews, Steph (Ken) Duilio, Jodi Labertew, Bryan (Heidi) Labertew, Holly (Darren) Elings, Ashten (Rob) Hayes, Chauncee (Jimmy) Hyde; great-nieces and nephews, Jordan, Jacob, Katelyn Duilio, Emma (Jake) Atkins, Elaina and Keira Labertew, Lilly and Luka Elings, Jantz and Jerzey Hyde, Lyrec Hayes; and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Beverly Labertew; siblings, David and Judy Labertew; parents-in-law, Marvin and Junella De Goey.

Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, July 27 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Memorials can be made in memory of Darrell to the Warren County Fair.
