Darrell Lee Brown Jr., 66, of Indianola, Iowa, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on May 8, 1960, in Des Moines, Iowa. Darrell was the son of Darrell Lee Brown Sr. and Judith Ann McMains Richards. He was raised on the east side of Des Moines, where he attended East High School. From a young age, he discovered a passion that would stay with him for the rest of his life. Racing alongside his father ignited a love for speed, competition, and the racing community. Known to many by his racing number, 72B, Darrell found joy at the track and formed friendships that lasted a lifetime.
In 1982, Darrell met the love of his life and soulmate, Connie Hess. Together they built a beautiful life filled with unwavering love, laughter, and more than four decades of cherished memories. Their home was always open to family and friends, and over the years, many of those friends became family. Above all else, Darrell's greatest pride and joy was the family he helped build.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, Darrell Lee Brown Sr. and Judith Ann McMains Richards; his beloved son, Darrell Lee Brown III; and his cherished infant grandson, Mario Robles.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his devoted wife of more than 40 years, Connie Brown; his children, Tim Brown (Amber), Steven Hess (Kara), and Jami Brown (Eric); his beloved grandchildren, Timothy, Henry, Emberly, Ava, Jett, Ella, Mia, Brooklynn Brown, Israel, Perla, John John, and Anna; his precious great-granddaughter, Blessing; his sister, Julie Brown; his step-sister, Donita; his half-brother, Tim Hope; his half-sister, Donna Hope McConkey; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, lifelong friends, and fellow racers who were blessed to know him.
Darrell will be remembered for his generous heart, his quick smile, his love of family, and his lifelong passion for racing. Whether he was at the track, spending time with those he loved, or sharing stories with family and friends, he made a lasting impression on everyone he met. His legacy will live on through the lives of his children, grandchildren, great-granddaughter, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that Darrell has been reunited with those who went before him. His race here on earth is complete, but the love he shared and the memories he gave will remain with us forever.
"The checkered flag has fallen, but your legacy will race on in our hearts forever."
A Celebration of life Gathering will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 19, 2026 at Moat’s Park in Indianola.
