Dale Ray Putney passed away peacefully at Legacy House in Indianola, IA on Sunday, January 17, 2010, at the age of 70 after a long battle with bone cancer and frontal temporal lobe dementia. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, January 22 at the First Baptist Church in Indianola with burial following in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Dale was born on March 11, 1939, west of Indianola to Clifford and Louise Nielsen Putney. He moved several times with his family and graduated from New Virginia High School. His first job was at the "New Uttica," a clothing store in downtown Des Moines. On October 27, 1958 he started work at Firestone Tire and Rubber. He retired on November 1, 1998, with 40 years of service at the age of 59 ½ years old. He took pride in working at Firestone. Only one other individual still working at Firestone had more years of service than Dale. Dale farmed southwest of Indianola on a farm he and his wife purchased in 1963. It was there they raised their children.
Dale attended the First Baptist Church of Indianola, serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, trustee, church moderator and was always willing to offer prayer at communion or any other time as needed. His faith was strong. He made sure his family was at church every Sunday when his children were growing up and as long as he was able to attend.
Dale and Jane Ann Propst were untied in marriage on March 4, 1960. To this union three children were born. Dale and Jane would have celebrated 50 years of marriage this March. He is survived by his wife Jane, son Rodney (Lou Ann) Putney, daughters Cindy (Bart) Brummer and Debbie (Marty) Miller all of Indianola as well as his grandchildren Hannah (David) Paul, Ethan Putney, Amy Olson, Jacob Putney, Zach, Wes, Dillon, Cody and Seth Brummer, Sidney and Colton Miller and one great-granddaughter Kaitlyne Paul. Also surviving are his brothers, Harold (Gloria) Putney of Tennessee and Pete (Carol) Putney of New Virginia, IA; one sister, Mary (Lyle) Berry-Rodda of Berwick, IA and one sister-in-law, Geraldine Putney of Indianola; two cousins who were like brothers to him, Darrell (Juanita) Putney and Don (Carol) Putney both of Indianola, IA; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Propst of Red Wing, MN as well as many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, brother LeRoy Putney and father-in-law Charles Propst.
Visitation will be held 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 21 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with family present from 5:30 to 8 p.m. to greet friends. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, American Cancer Society or the First Baptist Church.
