Obituary

DALE HAGEN Indianola Dale Benson Hagen, 73, of Indianola, Iowa, died on Monday, January 26, from complications of cancer. He was born on August 2, 1941, to Edward and Geoline (Lena) Hagen in Webster, South Dakota, and grew up on a farm near Roslyn, South Dakota. He graduated from Roslyn High School in 1959 and from Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, in 1968, after having worked in Minneapolis for the Donaldson Co. and Control Data for three years and serving in the U.S. Navy from 1964-1966. He moved to Des Moines in 1968 where he worked for the Bankers Life Co. before attending and earning his law degree from Drake Law School in 1973. Dale practiced law in Indianola before becoming a Chief Juvenile Probation Officer for the Fifth Judicial District in 1977. In 1988 he was appointed by Governor Branstad to serve the Fifth Judicial District as an Iowa District Court Judge. Following his retirement from the bench in 2009 he served the court as a mediator and arbitrator in central Iowa. He was a member of the Warren County Bar Association and the Iowa State Bar Association. Dale served on the Indianola Concert Association Board and the Friends of the Indianola Library Board. He also coached middle school mock trial teams and was active in the Des Moines Metro Opera Guild (Indianola Chapter). A devoted racquetball player, he was passionate about bringing the YMCA to Indianola. Being one of strong faith, he was a committed, active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to Redeemer Lutheran Church, the Indianola Public Library, the Indianola YMCA, or HCI Care Services of Iowa. Dale will be remembered for his quick wit, his love of family and friends, his calm demeanor, his love of music and sports, and his efforts to stay physically fit. His long-awaited grandchildren were especially dear. Dale was married on August 17, l968, in Roslyn, South Dakota, to his wife Julia (Olson), who survives him. In addition, he is survived by a son Joel (Erica) of Batavia, Illinois; daughters Emily Hagen (Jesse Berndt) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Katherine (Joseph) Bendon of Indianola; grandchildren Ellis and Anders Hagen and Annabelle Bendon; brother Glenn Hagen as well as nieces and nephews whom he cherished. Besides his parents, those preceding him in death were an infant son Mark and his siblings Paul Hagen, Mildred Lee, and Connie Marquette and their spouses. Visitation will be held at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola on Thursday, January 29, from 4 to 8 p.m. with family present from 5:30 to 8 p.m. His memorial service will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Indianola on Friday, January 30, at 10:30 am. The family would like to thank all of the medical personnel who helped during Dale's illness and all who have provided support throughout this difficult time.
