Obituary

CLINTON H. RICHEY Norwalk Services for Clinton Richey, 75, who passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, January 20, 2014, will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 24 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Indianola. Burial will follow in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery. He leaves behind his wife, Jo, three children, four grandchildren. Clint was born May 29, 1938 to Clinton Howard Richey and Bernice Williams Richey in Iowa City, Iowa. Clint grew up in the West Liberty, Iowa area, attended rural schools in the primary grades, graduated from West Liberty High School in 1956. He attended Muscatine Jr. College; Iowa State Teachers College, now known as UNI; graduating with an Industrial Arts teaching degree in 1964. He also continued formal education at Iowa State. He taught high school Industrial Arts in Council Bluffs for 6 years and in the Indianola schools for 28 years. Some of the areas he taught were welding, machine shop, drafting trades and industries co-op program, woods, metals, small engine repair, home construction and repair. He also taught adult education and community college courses. He retired from teaching in 1998. He volunteered for the United States Army Reserves, completed basic training and was in the active reserve for six years. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs. Later he transferred to Redeemer Lutheran in Indianola, where he was an active member serving on the council, several task forces, and took personal responsibility for church property, repair and maintenance. He also led the green team in making members more aware of environmental issues. In 1988, Clint and Jo moved into the house he designed and built with their family. After retirement, he continued sharing his skills through his involvement with Habitat for Humanity. He was on the steering committee which formed the Warren County affiliate. He served on the building committee, the board, and served as site supervisor for several homes. Clint was an avid vegetable gardener and recycler. He could repair, construct and invent things as he needed them. He had a passion for his tools. He loved to square dance. He was a member of the Suz-Q's dance club for 30 years. Clint was a member of the Indianola Evening Lions, working with the KidSight program. The Lion's motto, "We Serve", was his motto too. As he said, "That's what we are here for." Those who gratefully shared his life are his wife Jo, children and grandchildren: Christine (Ed) Solheim (Goran and Oliver), Casey (Jill) Richey (Colton and Caitlyn), and Carlton (Jen) Richey. He is also survived by a sister, Joan (Bob) Lightner, a brother, Duane (Margaret) Richey; 2 aunts, nine nieces and nephews, many great-nieces and nephews, sister-in-law Barbara Vetos, and a brother-in-law Bill (Rosemary) Vetos. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton and Bernice Richey. Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, January 23 at Redeemer Lutheran Church where family will be present to greet friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to Redeemer Lutheran Church or Warren County Habitat for Humanity.
