Cecil George Pace passed away on January 28, 2025 at Huntington Place Memory Care in Janesville, Wisconsin at the age of 93.
Cecil, son of George and Maude Pace, was born on December 23, 1931 near Orient, Iowa and lived on a farm until moving with his family to Des Moines Iowa in 1951. Cecil was the youngest of six boys in the family.
He met and married the love of his life, Donna Sutherland, after being discharged from the Army in 1956. They married on June 2, 1957 at the Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Indianola. To this union, a daughter, Kyla and son, Carl was born.
Cecil was drafted into the Army during the Korean War and served as Chief Maintenance Officer of the transmitter site in Fort Buchanan, San Juan, Puerto Rico. After being discharged from the Army in 1956, he was employed as an audio-visual technician for Bowdre TV in Des Moines, Iowa. After moving from Des Moines, he was the audio-visual technician, funeral director assistant and sales person for Mosher Furniture & Funeral Homes of Milo, Lacona and Melcher, Iowa for seven years. He then delivered sacked feed for Conner Feed & Supply of Indianola. After moving to Indianola, he and Donna purchased the Indianola Furniture Exchange store. They sold the store, and he was employed as Manager of the Audio-Visual Department of the Des Moines School District serving 72 buildings for 32 years, retiring in 1994.
Cecil loved playing the organ, guitar, ukulele and dulcimer, all "by ear" and fixing anything and everything. He built from scratch and flew many radio-controlled airplanes after retirement. He always enjoyed whistling, camping, fishing, fixing everything that was repairable and playing card and board games with family and friends.
Cecil and Donna loved to camp, western square and round dance, and travel together in their RV, as well as spending time with their family and camping friends at Cutty's Campground in Grimes, IA. He and Donna were members of the Suzy Q's Square Dance Club of Indianola, Levi's n' Lace Square Dance Club of West Des Moines, Fireside Square Dance Camping Club of Des Moines and danced throughout Iowa. He served on the Board of the South-Central Iowa Square Dance Federation. Cecil was a member of the First Congregational Church of Milton and served as Trustee after moving to Janesville, WI.
Cecil is survived by his wife, Donna Sutherland Pace, daughter, Kyla (Shawn) Wilson, and son Carl (Jolene) Pace; eight grandchildren, Jim (Briana) Wilson of Minnetonka, MN, Jessin (Mike) Skoug of Lake City , MN, Brett (Shelon) Wilson, Williamsburg, IA, Bryce Wilson of Eau Claire, WI, Shannon (Jeffrey) Knutson of West Des Moines, IA, Joshua (Stephanie) Pace, Lehigh, IA Jordon (Jesa) Pace of Sioux Center, IA; and Caitlin (Brian) Anderson of Ames, IA. He is also survived by his very much loved 17 great-grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his parents, George and Maude, his five brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard (Catherine), Paul (Lota), Earl (Helen) twin brothers, Floyd (Betty) and Lloyd (Arlene), a special friend, Dan Nicholson of Des Moines and many relatives and friends.
Cecil's good-natured gentleness, loving ways and humor will be greatly missed by Donna, his family and friends. Cecil's Family extends a special thanks to Agrace Nurse Brooke for her loving care and to the many wonderful caregivers at Huntington Memory Care.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, February 21 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, IA. Inurnment will follow in the IOOF Cemetery in Indianola. Memorials may be given to Agrace/Janesville 2901 N Wright Road, Janesville, WI 53546 or First Congregational Church of Milton, 741 E High Street, Milton, WI.
