CARL SANDY Indianola Services for Carl Sandy, 85, who passed away Friday, June 5, 2015 at the Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines, will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 9 at the First United Methodist Church in Indianola with burial following in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Carl Caraway Sandy was born October 10, 1929 in the farmhouse of the family Century Farm north of Liberty Center, Iowa. He graduated from Liberty Center High School and attended Simpson College. He taught at Hawkeye country school south of Liberty Center and farmed prior to working for the Federal government in Hampton, Iowa and Kansas City, Missouri (Civil Defense). He moved to Indianola in 1970 and retired in 1989 from the Federal Aviation Administration in Des Moines. Carl was united in marriage on October 26, 1952 to Mary Louise Baughman. He enjoyed playing the piano and violin in his younger years and was a follower of Bluegrass music in his retirement years. Survivors include his children, Don (Jan) Sandy, Rosemary (Dennis) Johnson and Irene Ludwig (Tim Twohey); eight grandchildren, Jason (Angela) Edgington, Jason (Fiona) Sandy, Mark (Kelly) Johnson, Jeremy (Jennifer) Sandy, Melissa (Jeff) Treece, Jeffrey (Kurtis) Jay, Jonathan Ludwig, Alexander Johnson; eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, son Frank Sandy. Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, June 8 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola where family will be present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given in Carl's name to Bright Kavanagh House or the First United Methodist Church.
