Celebration of Life services for Bill Lloyd Hulen, 82, who passed away Monday, March 20, 2017, at home, will be held 2 p.m., Friday, March 24 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Indianola with burial of cremains following in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Indianola.
Bill was born January 22, 1935 in Indianola, IA to Lloyd E. (Slim) and Margaret (McKee) Hulen. He graduated from Indianola High School in 1953 and from Simpson College in 1959. He played football in high school and college. He earned a tryout with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1958 in California, PA. He served in the U.S. Army for three years from 1959-1962 and played football at Fort Riley, KS and for the Brooke Army Medical Center team in San Antonio, TX. He was later inducted into both the Simpson College Hall of Fame and Indianola High School Hall of Fame.
He began teaching physical education and coaching football as an assistant to "Hap" Miller in Waukon, IA in 1963. He then taught and coached in Glenwood, IA for three years, and started the high school wrestling program there. He came to Southeast Polk Schools, Runnells, in 1967 and taught and coached there for twenty-seven years, retiring in 1994.
Bill married Sharon Mathias in 1959 and their marriage was blessed with two sons, Bill, Jr. and Michael. They built their home on an acreage north of Indianola in 1971. Bill raised sheep and both sons showed sheep at the Warren County Fair. Bill loved animals and had many and enjoyed them all, especially his dogs. He liked growing tomatoes and gourds. He enjoyed the weekly coffees with Indianola High School friends and the monthly breakfasts with his Southeast Polk retired teacher friends at Prairie Meadows.
Bill was a Member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and the Indianola American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon; two sons, Bill, Jr (Heather) of Indianola and Michael (Susie) of Foristell, MO; five grandchildren, Darby, Jeff, Cole, Brett and Hannah and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joan.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.; Thursday, March 23 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Kiya Koda Humane Society, 1206 North Jefferson, Indianola, IA 50125 and Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 2214 East 2
