Born in Mason City, Iowa, September 30, 1931 to Donald Romain and Marian (Jones) Davis, Betty was a 1949 graduate of Mason City High School. During her lifetime, she worked as a nurse's aide and also for a telephone company and the Des Moines Register. Betty met her future husband while working as a nurse's aid at the Park Hospital in Mason City where her ill father and future husband shared the same hospital room. Betty was united in marriage on October 21, 1950 to Richard Paul Smith, LTC Ret., who preceded her in death in 2005. During Betty's life, she was foremost a military wife and mother. The military life took Betty and her family to Indiana, Georgia, Hawaii and Iowa. During these years, seven children were born to Betty and Dick. Three children survive Betty, Laurie (Craig) Ryan, Barbara (Jim) Gamble and Mark (LuAnn) Smith; along with three sisters, Carol, Sharon, and Lois. Four children preceded her in death, Paul Leslie, Brian Scott, Randall Bruce and Penelope Lynn. Also preceding her are four siblings, Marilyn, Richard, Leslie and Bob. Grandma Betty's greatest legacy is her three children, twelve grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren with which she shared kindness, love, wisdom, humor and patience. She was there for all of us and we considered her "God's gift to us." Memorials may be given to the Warren County Health Services.
