BETTY C. MILLER Indianola Betty C. Miller, 89, of Indianola, died Tuesday, March 27, in Des Moines, of a stroke. Betty was born February 26, 1923, in Omaha, the daughter of John P. and Justina Regier Claassen. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Augustana College. Betty later was the founding librarian of the first full-service library in Milo, Iowa. She was predeceased by her husband, Jud L. Miller, who died in 2003, and her stepson, Joe Miller. Betty is survived by a son, Mick Rood of Moreno Valley, California; a stepson, Paul C. Miller of Hyattsville, Maryland; a daughter, Kay Rood of Seattle; two stepdaughters, Marion Cook of East Granby, Connecticut, and Elizabeth Ruth Miller of Iowa City; a brother, John R. Claassen of Hillsboro, Oregon; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Betty loved literature and valued education. She encouraged her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to achieve their highest potential. She held most dear the aspirations of women, the pursuit of free thought and the cause of social justice. To remember Betty, the family suggests that you read a book to a child. A memorial service is being planned. Donation in her name may be made to the Nature Conservancy or Planned Parenthood.
