Obituary

Services for Betty Jene Broyles, 97, of Indianola, who passed away Sunday, September 22, 2024 in Ankeny, will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Overton Funeral Home, with burial following in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery.  Visitation will be held prior to services from 1 to 2 p.m.

Betty was born on February 6, 1927, in Jefferson Heights, Southern Warren County to parents Gorham Williams and Pauline (Crooks) Williams. Betty graduated from Indianola High School in 1944. She was united in marriage to Junior Dale Broyles on February 15, 1948 and they shared sixty-seven years of marriage. They were blessed with four children: Wayne, Duane, Vonda, and Christine.

Betty was deeply committed to her faith and her community, which was demonstrated by her many volunteer activities including the First United Methodist Church, Good Samaritan Care Center, Helping Hand, and local elections. She enjoyed the friendships with the volunteers and knowing that she was helping those in need. Betty was also a multi-gallon blood donor with the Blood Center of Iowa.

She enjoyed the summer Operas at the Methodist Church, coffee with friends, and was a SKIP BO savant when playing with family and friends. Betty was lucky to have spent her final years living with her sisters Leota and Bernadine, where they frequently enjoyed spirited games of SKIP BO. She also delighted in making noodles, baking bread every Saturday morning, and baking delicious cinnamon rolls. When each of her grandchildren graduated from high school, she gifted them with an embroidered and hand-quilted beautiful queen size quilt (several are on display in the chapel).

Betty is survived by her children, Wayne (Kimla) Broyles, Duane (Andrea Gramentz) Broyles, Vonda Bone and Christine Broyles; grandchildren, Jamie Whistler, Joseph Broyles, Maria "Tess" Deyo, Stephanie (Ian Hollenbach) Broyles, Victoria Gramentz, Cody (Amanda Short) Bone, Melanie Bone, Meridith (Andy) Marshall and Alexis (Rob) Burdon; great grandchildren, Destiny Deyo, Parker Deyo, Camryn Hollenbach, Conor Hollenbach, Archer Marshall and Parker Burdon; sisters, Bernadine Cotten and Marjorie (Clyde) Nordgren; and sister-in-law, Lucille (Dale) Henry.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Junior Dale Broyles; parents, Gorham and Pauline Williams; siblings, Leota Broyles, Maxine McAninch, Lyle Williams, Jeanette Condon, Mary Driver, an infant brother, William Walter Williams; and son-in-law Mark Bone.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Betty may be given to the First United Methodist Church.
