Barbara Sayre, 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at The Village in Indianola, Iowa. No services will be held, burial will take place in the IOOF Cemetery, Indianola, IA at a later date.
Barbara Ann Worth was born September 24,1936, in Monroe Iowa. In 1957, she graduated from Simpson College where she majored in education and was active in the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She also met her beloved husband, John Sayre, whom she married in 1958.
For the next several decades, Barbara devoted herself to teaching elementary students in both Des Moines and Indianola. In 1992, she was instrumental in helping to found Sayre Montessori School, which was named in her honor.
Barbara also loved to travel around the world with her husband, John. In later years, she enjoyed the company of her book clubs, her cat (Helen) and watching lots of movies, sporting and political events.
Barbara will be forever remembered for her many years of service as a teacher, P.E.O (a Philanthropic Educational Organization) member, Pi Beta Phi sister and cherished aunt and friend.
She is preceded in death by her husband, John Sayre (July 2014), and survived by two cousins, Sally Morris of Monroe and Holly Johnson of Des Moines. In addition, her nieces and nephews are: Cynthia Coolidge Mainini, Ann Sayre Christian, Mary Sayre Eriksson, Elizabeth Sayre Cheevers, George Ruggles Coolidge III and William Raymond Sayre.
