Barbara Anne (Cotton) Pauley was born in Nashville, TN to parents William Cotton and Lucile Dies Cotton. She was the older sibling of Billie Crowell, a beloved sister and closest friend. Barbara attended Low-Heywood School for Girls in Stamford CT, where she excelled in her studies, especially classical languages, and graduated second in her class. She attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts for a brief period and studied literature. In 1946, Barbara married Robert R. Pauley of New Canaan, CT, the love of her life, who preceded her in death in 2009. Barbara and Bob were married for 63 years and they had four children: Shen Pauley (resides in Barre, MA), Andrew Pauley (resides in Berkeley, CA), Robert Pauley JR (resides in Los Angeles, CA) and John Pauley (resides in Indianola, IA). Barbara and Bob had nine grandchildren: Jessica Graham Livingston, Alicia Collins McBride, Tain Collins, Luke Pauley, Claire Pauley, Alex Pauley, Nicholas Pauley, Benjamin Pauley and Samuel Pauley. They had three great grandchildren: George Graham, Hugo Graham, and Marlowe McBride. First and foremost, Barbara loved both her immediate and extended family. She was very proud of her family history and her southern roots. She spent many hours researching family history and documenting the lives of her ancestors. Her love of family was sustained and nourished by her life-long faith in the Methodist Christian tradition and community service. In Landrum, SC where she and Bob lived for twenty years, Barbara helped organize and run a "meals on wheels" program for over a decade. Seeing the need for a new church building, Barbara organized the fund raising that led to a new church for the Methodist congregation. She also was on the board of the public library, where she organized a fund raising drive for the creation of a new library building. She spent many years volunteering in public schools and in church charities and activities of many kinds. While in high school, Barbara developed a life-long love of athletics and learning. She became an avid and accomplished tennis player, who loved to play and compete. In her later years, she became a historian of the game and an enthusiastic spectator of tournaments. Following her year at college, Barbara continued to study, read and write. Her love of fiction, led her to write two mystery novels that were published by Doubleday Publishers in New York City (Blood Kin and Voices Long Hushed). In her younger years, she published short stories in fiction magazines and in her last two years was working on editing two now finished manuscripts. After Bob's death in 2009, Barbara moved to Indianola to live with her son John Pauley, daughter in-law Judy Pauley and their twin sons Benjamin and Samuel. She loved the Indianola community and frequently remarked on the friendliness and kindness of the people. Barbara was always an avid gardener and so she loved to walk through Buxton Park. She was also able to take trips to visit her other children and grandchildren and she took yearly sojourns to Tennessee to visit her family there who she always cherished and loved. Services for Barbara Pauley, 89, who passed away Friday, April 4, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 12 in Smith Chapel on the Simpson College Campus. Family will be present to greet friends after the service (in Dirlam Lounge at the front of the chapel). An additional memorial service will take place in Triune, TN in May.
