Obituary

A Celebration of life gathering for Barbara Louise Freeman, 81, who passed away May 11, 2020, in Rochester, MN, will be held, following CDC guidelines, from 1 to 3 p.m., September 12 at the Annett Nature Center south of Indianola. Graveside services were held in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Barbara was born September 5, 1938, the 3 rd of 5 children born to Max and Helen (Williams) Miller. She grew up in Indianola, IA where she attended school and graduated from Indianola High School in 1956. She married Austin Freeman on September 9, 1956. Barb and Austin raised their three children on their farm in rural Ackworth, Monty (Lori) of Indianola, Caryn Young of Des Moines, and Bradley of Chaska Minnesota.

Some of Barb's greatest joys were her grandchildren, Callie (Jacob) Hopper and Kelsey (Kyle) Longnecker, Christy Young, Heather Ann Tompkins and Eddie (Heather Jo) Tompkins, Drew Freeman and Grace Freeman. She also delighted in her 5 sweet great-granddaughters, Abby, Debbie, Jules, Becca and Tori.

Barbara's employment included working in the Indianola High School office, the Central Paving office, and in 2001 she retired from working as Deputy Treasurer for Warren County.

Hobbies included playing cards, baking for family gatherings, and any children or grandchildren's school or extracurricular activities. Barb belonged to card clubs, TOPS, and Red Hats. She enjoyed her Retired Employee Lunches and socializing with classmates. Her favorite teams to follow were Iowa State basketball and the Chicago Cubs. Barb was a Warren County 4H leader and her family appreciated her help in grooming show calves for Charolais shows, the Warren County Fair and the Iowa State Fair.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Max and Helen, sister Dixie Lee, brother Royden, and son-in-law Rick Young. She is survived by her husband, Austin Freeman; children, Monty (Lori) of Indianola, Caryn Young of Des Moines, and Bradley of Chaska Minnesota; sister-in-law, Mary Miller of Indianola, brother Max (Janet) Miller of Indianola, and sister Dr. Peggy Miller of Maryville Missouri, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many dear friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Warren County Conservation Board.
