IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Austin Andrew
Freeman
January 24, 1935 – August 24, 2025
Austin A. Freeman passed away peacefully Monday, August 25, 2025, at Valley View Village in Des Moines. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 30 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, with burial following in the Sandyville Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
Austin was born and raised on a dairy farm in Beech, Iowa, where he began working at a very young age and developed his lifelong love for farming. He graduated from Beech High School and was an active member of 4-H, later serving as a Warren County 4-H leader. He especially enjoyed showing Charolais calves at the Warren County Fair and the Iowa State Fair.
Over the years, Austin worked for Honegger's Hatchery delivering chicks, built his own business as a self-employed electrician, and later served as a rural carrier for the United States Postal Service until his retirement. After retiring, he returned to what he loved most—spending time on the farm and caring for animals.
Austin found joy in nature, art, and music, and he had a special bond with animals of all kinds. He also loved to hunt, fish, and tend his garden, sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. More than anything, he cherished the company of his loved ones. His warm spirit, hard-working hands, and gentle heart will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila; children, Monty (Lori) Freeman, Caryn Young, Bradley Freeman, Kristen (Joe) Radford, and Casey (Jilaine) Freeman; grandchildren, Callie (Jacob) Hopper, Kelsey (Kyle) Longnecker, Christy Young, Heather Ann Tompkins, Eddie Tompkins, Drew Freeman, Grace Freeman, Jacob Radford, Heather Jo Tompkins; 7 great-grandchildren; brother, Don (Linda) Freeman; and many nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barb; parents, Floyd and Dorothy Freeman; brother, Dwight Freeman; sister, Juanita Dykstra; son-in-law, Rick Young; and niece, Mollie Alcorn.
Memorial contributions can be made in Austin's memory to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
