Memorial visitation for Annette Porterfield, 56, who passed away Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at home, will be held 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, November 19, 2021 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola.

Annette was born January 2, 1965 to Jerry and Mary Lou Carter. She was the 2nd of 3 children. She grew up in Melcher-Dallas. She graduated from Des Moines Alternative School. She then became a CNA, working in a nursing home while attending Mercy School of Nursing to become an RN. Annette was able to maintain a 4.0 grade point average throughout nursing school, all while raising two children at home. After getting her RN, she worked at the Lucas County Hospital as a nurse for over 13 years. After leaving Lucas County, she worked in numerous nursing homes in the Des Moines area. She then became a grandmother, which she was very happy about. She has two granddaughters that mean the world to her. She would even watch them after school every day. Some of her hobbies included training and breaking horses, as well as breeding and selling German Shepherds. At the time of her death, she and her husband owned 6 horses. Her favorite and most loved German Shepherd was Volker, but she really loved all animals.

Annette is survived by her husband, David; children, Paul Carter, Sara (Craig) Swanson, Megan Donahue; granddaughters, Anna and Leigha Swanson; mother, Mary Lou MacLaird; siblings, Karen (Jeff) Hendrickson, Tony Carter; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her father, Jerry Carter; grandmothers, Eva Hampton and Delores Metz. Annette will be greatly missed by all.

Memorials may be given in her name to the family for a contribution at a later date.
