Obituary

Ada Beth Johnson, 78, of Indianola, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa, with the love of her family surrounding her.

Ada was born on August 7, 1947, to Murl and Zelma (Nash) Johnson. She was raised on a farm east of Lacona and graduated from Southeast Warren High School in 1965.

Ada devoted 42 years of service to the United States Postal Service, where she built lasting relationships and became a familiar face to many. Retirement did not slow her down. During the summer months, she continued doing what she loved through her work at Busy Bee Garden Center and with McConnell Concessions. Through both of these jobs, Ada found joy not only in the work itself but in the people she met along the way. Many coworkers became close friends, and countless customers who began as familiar faces eventually became dear friends over the years.

Ada found joy in life’s simple but meaningful moments. She was a Master Gardener who loved spending time around flowers and plants and enjoyed sewing and needlework, creating gifts and keepsakes that carried pieces of her love. She enjoyed playing cards, feeding the birds and squirrels, and making homemade cinnamon rolls to share with others. Ada spent countless years involved with the Boy Scouts of America, dedicating many hours volunteering and supporting youth and families. She also shared her love of music by serving as a piano accompanist for band competitions over the years. She looked forward to the Johnson family cousin get-togethers throughout the year and treasured the time spent together. She was also a member of the Liberty Center American Legion Auxiliary.

Above all else, one of Ada’s greatest joys and proudest titles was being “Grandma A.” Amos was her world, and the special bond they shared was one of the greatest joys of her life.

One of Ada’s cherished companions was a dog named Louie, who first came into her life in the spring of 2020 as a simple request to watch him for a weekend. What began as a short stay became something much more, as Louie brought Ada comfort, companionship, and joy. Recognizing how much he meant to her, Louie’s family lovingly welcomed sharing him with Ada.

She is lovingly remembered by her son, Kevin (Jenn) Baughman; son, Mike (Lindsey) Baughman; her beloved grandson, Amos Baughman; brother, Rex (Kay) Johnson; along with many beloved cousins, extended family members, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Murl and Zelma Johnson, and her brother, Hugh Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 22, 2026 at Fairview Community Church with burial following in the Woodburn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2026 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola.

Memorials in memory of Ada may be directed to Taylor House Hospice or the Liberty Center American Legion Auxiliary.
